About

Urban Theatre’s Leading Lady

Whatever the key is to achieving unrelenting theatrical success, she’s found it. To industry insiders, she’s most commonly known as “The Doctor”…the play doctor to be exact. Having conceptualized and perfected the secret to creating theatrical magic, she is an infinite creative source of knowledge on the inside track, with a finger on the pulse of the African-American community.

Over the last two decades, Angela Barrow Dunlap, has risen to the top of the African-American urban theater world as the producer and creator of multi-million dollar grossing stage plays such as My Brother Marvin, If These Hips Could Talk, Why Do Good Girls Like Bad Boyz, Real Men Pray, Gossip Lies & Secrets and her latest hit, Church Girl. As she plots a new journey into the world of home entertainment, Church Girl is the first of her projects to be transformed into a DVD, marking a new milestone in Dunlap’s career.

Church Girl, currently airing on Black Entertainment Television and Netflixis a cutting edge musical based on true events starring Demetria McKinney of Tyler Perry’s House of Payne, Actress Robin Givens, Sean Blakemore of General Hospital, R&B Songstress A’ngela Winbush and Gospel Recording Artist Karen Clark Sheard.

Barrow-Dunlap’s musical If These Hips Could Talk was one of the longest running shows in urban theater history, completing a two year run. It starred some of Hollywood’s premiere African-American actors, among them, legendary actor Billy Dee Williams, Robin Givens, Tichina Arnold of Martin and Everybody Hates Chris fame, Darrin Dewitt Henson from Showtime’s Soulfood and Stomp The Yard, LisaRaye of UPN’s All of Us and comedian John Henton who played Overton Wakefield Jones on UPN’s Living Single. If These Hips Could Talk is currently being adapted into a feature film.

A go-getter by nature, Barrow-Dunlap’s aspirations include building a school for the arts. With a strong desire to give back to the community, she currently hosts an urban youth theatre workshop called Big Starz. The goal is to discover and enrich the talent of others and to cultivate the next generation of theatrical gifts.

According to Barrow-Dunlap, her extended vision is to lay a foundation by establishing a national platform, which will promote unification and cultivation, within the theatrical community.
